This is an exciting adventure of a wolf and his pack. Warm is not the biggest wolf, but is a great watcher. His alpha male father of the pack tells him that there is more than one way to be a good pack member. “The wolf who watches; the one who listens and learns – is the wolf who wins in the end.” So Warm is the watcher of the pack. When Warm and his siblings are just grown, a new litter of pups comes and the family works together to kill food and feed the family. One day a rival pack attacks Warm’s pack. Mother tells Warm to take the pups and keep them safe while she steers the attacking wolves in a different direction. Warm obeys and soon realizes that he is now the only one who can help the pups. He does not know how to hunt well and cannot do it alone anyway. The pups find small game, but it is not enough for them to eat well. What can Warm do?
This story is fiction, but is based on the story of a real wolf - Wolf Number 8. In 1995 wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park as part of a wolf recovery program. Wolf number 8 was smaller than his three bigger brothers and the rangers were not sure he would make it. His real life story is fascinating. Rosanne Parry has done a wonderful job in writing this story. She has studied wolves and knows their habits.
If you like this story, you will also enjoy Rosanne Parry’s book ‘A Wolf Called Wander’ about another wolf (OR-7 or Journey) who was tracked by wolf naturalists along his 1000-mile journey across the Pacific Northwest.
Both of these books are very popular in my library. I had to grab this one before I processed it for the library in order to read it!
