The authors propose a solution for deeper learning: teaching students to make meaning for themselves. Focusing specifically on the area of critical thinking, they suggest seven higher-order thinking skills that facilitate students’ acquisition of information for greater retention, retrieval, and transfer. Research indicates that these skills, which cut across content areas and grade levels, separate high achievers from low achievers.
