Based on interviews with unconventional problem solvers, the author explores how to be proactive in solving problems. We tend to handle problems after they surface (downstream), rather than fixing the systems that caused the problems (upstream). Downstream work is narrow and fast; upstream work is broad and slow. A well-designed system is the best intervention.
